We are not looking forward to the flights so much, but Victoria is a great place to go home to and it will be nice to be back. See you all soon.

Here are some parting images from Saturday, our last day, in Girona.

Today (Friday) was Salvador Dali discovery day for Michelle and I. The first stop on Dali day was the Dali Museum in Figueres, about a half-hour train trip north of Girona. As I think I may have mentioned in one of my Amsterdam blog posts, I am not much of an art aficionado. This doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy art; I do, but you won’t find me hanging out in museums or galleries for hours on end. With that said, we agreed that we would have spent more time in the Dali Museum in Figueres if we had the time to spend; it was really cool.

Second stop for the day was going to be somewhere on the Costa Brava (Mediterranean). In the end we decided that we would continue with the Dali action and head to Portlligat, where the Dali house is located. To get there we took a bus from Figueres to Cadaques, which ended up taking about an hour and stopped to pick people up and drop them off in a number of places along the way including Roses. Frankly the bus ride was kind of boring, except for the stretch from Roses to Cadaques over some significant coastal mountains on pretty narrow road.

After arriving in Cadaques we walked to the Dali house in Portlligat (a couple kms) and managed to get in without the recommended reservation; only small groups can go through the house at any given time. Not a whole lot of Dali’s art here, but it was very interesting none-the-less. The house still contains furniture and other stuff that was there when he and his wife lived there. Beyond the contents of the house, its structure and location are very interesting and surely would have been a great place to live and work. Unfortunately, my photos of the Dali house don’t really do it justice. I’m not sure that the house in itself is a reason to travel here, but if you’re planning on visiting northeast Spain, it would be worth a look.

We ended up getting back to Girona around 9pm and stopped in at Zapanzar for some tasty Basque/Spanish food. Maybe we’ll get some food pics tomorrow.

Here are the photos we took while we were on our Dali journey today. A map of our little walk around Cadaques and Portlligat is also included.

Today was the last of our three days with the bike rentals. We’ll be hiking for the remainder of our days here in Girona. Thankfully, the sun was out again this morning, which made it easier for me to justify going out for a bike ride with soggy shoes from yesterday. Michelle decided to take a rest day, so no riding for her today.

I chose a route with more hills than our previous outings and while this meant some suffering, I was rewarded with awesome downhill and beautiful, quiet rural roads for almost the whole ride. This was the kind of riding we cyclists dream of. Click here to view a map and GPS data from my ride today.

Time for foods for us. You might like to know that there is a sweet thunder storm going on here right now. Don’t worry though we have our umbrellas.

Here is a map and pictures from my ride today.

A slightly less impressive day today in terms of weather, but we didn’t let that stop us from venturing out on the bikes towards Sant Feliu de Guixols on the Mediterranean. Getting to Sant Feliu de Guixols is pretty straightforward if you’re driving, and according to the information we have on hand only about 30km from where we are staying. At the start we tried a bit of the bike pathway to the coast, but decided that since it was gravel and we had road bikes we would stick to the roads. The secondary roads were great; nice and quite, albeit hilly. Other roads like the C65 highway was not quite as nice, but did the job (on some stretches bikes and other slow moving vehicles are prohibited). Our ride ended up being about 85km.

Ordinarily, one might think that visiting a seaside Mediterranean town would be quite exciting, but in this case we had a few things working against us: one it was threatening rain while we were in Sant Feliu de Guixols and the clouds looked even worse in the direction of Girona for our return trip; two, we were in town during siesta time, so it was pretty much a ghost town; and three, it is the fall here and I get the impression that seaside towns are pretty quiet this time of year. So, our stay in Sant Feliu de Guixols was short; we didn’t even stop for lunch, which would have been good since we had some hills to climb on the way back to Girona.

The ride back ended up being pretty good for the most part and the threatening clouds actually made for some pretty views across the valley to the mountains on the other side. Eventually the rain decided to fall (with about 5km remaining) and as an added bonus I got a flat tire with about 3km remaining:( Click here to see a map and GPS data for our ride on the Garmin website.

Where oh where has my Internet gone? Our current accommodation doesn’t have Internet access, and while it is not a necessity, it’s my opinion that it can certainly be useful while on vacation (weather, restaurants, bike rental information, bike/hike route planning, etc.) I think I will add greater priority to Internet access for accommodation on future trips, except of course to countries where I know that is asking a bit much.

After a couple days of wandering around Girona without a whole lot of direction I feel like we are making some headway in terms of settling in, aside from an annoying cold that I have managed to pick up. During some of our downtime over the past couple days, we have noticed that there is some quality programming on the tube here, namely lots of 80’s re-runs (A-Team, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, etc.) as well as Michelle’s favourite, “Medicopter”, a cheesy soap style show based on a helicopter rescue crew in the Pyrenees or the Alps. Interestingly there is also a preponderance of infomercials for vibratory weight-loss devices.

Today we were able to sort out some rental road bikes and went out for a short ride west of town this afternoon. In picking up the bikes we may have found potential accommodation should we ever end up back in Girona. Hotel Historic, seems like a good spot in the heart of old Girona. The guy who helped us with the bikes was happy to tell us all about the professional cyclists who live in Girona including Michael Barry, David Millar, and others. Click here to view GPS map and ride data from our ride.

Saturday October 31 was a travel day from Amsterdam to Girona. The flight from Amsterdam to Barcelona took a little less than two hours and occurred at the crack of dawn, a wee bit too early we have decided. From the airport in Barcelona, which is pretty fancy by the way, we shuttled over to a train station and started our journey to Girona. The train ride was nothing to rave about since most of what could be seen was either run-down industrial or under construction. With that said, the train itself was modern, comfortable, and cheap. Getting to our vacation rental was easy since the owner who speaks English came to pick us up from the train station. All told, we spent about six hours travelling between Amsterdam and Girona.

Today, November 1, we were out for three or four hours exploring the old part of Girona on foot. November 1 is kind of an important day here and marks the end of the cultural festival Fires de Sant Narcis. I can’t say too much more about it since I don’t understand the Spanish information I have on hand that well. When I get some Internet action, which is lacking in our vacation rental, I will probably do some more research. For now, I can say that downtown Girona was crazy busy today with hordes of people milling about the streets checking out art vendors and other attractions. While we weren’t navigating the crowds and attractions, we walked along most of the remaining wall that protected the old city.

Overall impressions of Girona so far: nice weather (sunny and 20-25 Celsius so far); interesting old quarter; interesting surrounding geography; tapas shouldn’t be hard to find; almost no bike traffic in comparison to Amsterdam – except for a surprising number of fairly serious looking cross-country mountain bikers.

At this point I suspect that I won’t be doing daily blog posts due to a lack of Internet access in our accommodation, but we’ll see. Maybe the library has internet access and is a cool place to hang out while I put together blog posts.

The photos that follow appear in the order that they were taken today.

Today was our last day here in Amsterdam. The week has gone by as all weeks seem to go: quickly. I think all of us feel like our time here has been well-spent, I know for sure that I do. Before I get too far down the road to a teary goodbye, I will do an about-face and let you know about the fun stuff we did today. Oh, before I do that, I’ll point out that I do not know what our Internet situation is going to be in Spain, starting tomorrow. If you don’t see a posting at the usual time tomorrow it probably means that I don’t have convenient network access. Stay tuned, I’ll post something eventually.

I started off the morning with a trip back to the bike shop to drop off my rental road bike and then walked the 4km back to our temporary abode through Vondelpark and downtown Amsterdam. Not much new to report here; the park was just as nice as it was the other day.

After taking care of some pre-departure logistics for a couple hours around lunchtime, Michelle, Lisa, and I headed off to Mac Bike to rent some Amsterdam city-style bikes for a ride down the Amstel River (a similar ride to the one I did on Wednesday). After the ride: to the Puccini chocolate shop for Michelle to re-supply; some OK food at an Italian-style restaurant; and finally a trip to the Van Gogh Museum.

To start things off, here is a map of our 20km bike ride on the city bikes. Click here to see the GPS data and map on the Garmin website.

It’s our last day in Amsterdam and I thought I would throw together a quick equipment/gear posting. I really have not done much traveling in my adult life, so I am far from being an expert on navigation while in foreign places.

For our 2009 Europe trip I decided to make use of some electronic goodies for navigation instead of paper-based resources. The two devices that have been important so far in Amsterdam are my Garmin 705 bike computer / GPS device and my iPod Touch.

Garmin 705 Bike Computer (GPS capable)

This device is a rather expensive bike-oriented GPS device that tells me how fast, how far, if my heart is about to explode, and many other things. Most importantly it functions like a GPS unit in a car and I can key in destinations and then follow a route to those destinations. Alternatively, it can be used as a palm-sized map that also tracks your path, which has been handy for hiking and bike riding.

Garmin 705 Bike Computer

Being bike-oriented the screen is quite a bit smaller than a car-oriented device, which I’ve found to be OK when out in the country, but more challenging to use when moving at speed through a city like Amsterdam. Having spent some time using an iPod Touch, I can say that interacting with the 705 is a bit clunky and slow comparatively. This is most noticeable when trying to pan or zoom.

In order for this thing to be of any use here in Europe I had to buy a city streets map on a microSD card. Topographical maps are also available for certain areas, but I decided to forgo that option for this trip. For my bike rides I have been creating bike routes (aka courses) on my laptop with Bike Route Toaster and then uploading them to the 705. This has worked quite well, but did require some learning, and has not been without the odd hiccup.

To summarize, I’ve been happy with the Garmin 705 so far and feel like I’m getting better at using it and the course creation software. Hopefully, this trend continues as we start our travels in Spain.

Apple iPod Touch (mini-computer)

The iPod for those who don’t know is basically a mini computer. You can do most stuff that people do with their home computers like, listen to music, watch videos, read and write e-mails, and waste time on the Internet.

iPod Touch (third generation)

In terms of navigation, I have been able to download a number of maps in PDF format (most notably, the Amsterdam transit map) and have found it rather handy to be able to refer to these while out and about in the city. The iPod’s relatively smooth and quick panning and zooming helps quite a bit.

The key differences between the iPod and the iPhone are network connectivity and GPS capability. With an iPhone you can get on the Internet anywhere, anytime, assuming you have paid your exorbitant phone bill. An iPod on the other hand only connects to WIFI networks (home or business wireless networks). There are lots of WIFI networks around, people seem to have caught on and most are secured, meaning no connection for the average iPod user. Of course, there is always the option to pay for access, at coffee shops etc.

Despite the network connectivity challenges with the iPod, I have found that it can do enough offline, that it can be pretty useful for travel navigation. A valid question is why don’t I just use an iPhone, which is pretty much capable of doing what the Garmin 705 and iPod do. This sounds good in theory, but at this point I am not interested in Canadian iPhone plans and felt I needed something more physically robust for bike riding, like the 705.

More university for Michelle and Lisa today and another bike ride for me. I’ll cut to the chase, I had another great bike ride, this one being the most ambitious of the three I have done here in the Netherlands.

I left the abode at about 11am and headed out to Noordwijk, a small town on the Atlantic, southwest of Amsterdam. I wanted to see the coast and had read that there was some interesting sand dune stuff out there, hence my decision to go. See the following map for an idea of where I went. Some of the towns I passed through: Rijsenhout; Burgerveen; Noordwijk; Zandvoort; Overveen, and Haarlem. Click here to view my bike ride route and GPS data on the Garmin website.

My bike ride route out to Noordwijk and Zandvoort, returning through Haarlem.

At the end of my ride today, while navigating the busy streets of Amsterdam, I found myself thinking that the traffic here is hilarious, although somewhat scary at first. I know there are more scary and hilarious places in the world as far as traffic goes, but this is what I am experiencing at the moment. On the surface it is somewhat chaotic, but it really does just sort of flow for everyone: cars, bike, scooters, and foot traffic, even without the things we are used to like stop signs, pedestrian rights of way, etc.

The following pictures appear in the order they were taken today. I may add food pictures later if we find something interesting to eat.

I’m not sure, but I think we may have lucked out with the weather over the last couple days here in Amsterdam. Today especially, was sunny almost all day with almost no wind. Not the sort of weather I was expecting prior to our arrival.

Michelle and Lisa were at the university again this morning, but were able to get out and do some stuff this afternoon in the nice weather. I started the day with a short bike ride south on the Amstel River. The ride was just long enough to get out of the city a bit and into the country-side. Click here to see my bike route and GPS data.

Bike ride route along the Amstel River.

This afternoon, Michelle and I headed out for a run/hike at Bezoekerscentrum, which is a pretty big park/recreational area east of the airport (Schiphol). This is where Amsterdam’s rowing venue is located. The park also contains the largest hill I have seen so far in the city; it might have been 10-20m at its highest point. I’ve been doing regular hikes on Wednesdays with some of my co-workers; this was our Amsterdam version, too bad the others couldn’t make it. Click here to see our hike route and GPS data.

We wrapped up the day with another dining outing at Burgermeester and took some photos this time for your viewing pleasure.

The following photos appear in the order they were taken today.
