These last couple months of house hunting, research, and buying have been a bit of a drag. That’s not to say I didn’t appreciate the challenge that came with various fixit projects, like changing a toilet etc., but there’s pretty much no way I’d prefer doing that sort of stuff over bike riding.

Time to get back to a more active lifestyle… I don’t really have any good excuses to for not doing so, so I shall ‘do’ rather than ‘do not’… thanks recently viewed Yoda quote.

This afternoon turned out pretty well… good for a road bike ride, which ended up being my first Saanich Peninsula loop of the year. Today also marked the first ride of the year wearing shorts instead of the usual winter stuff. While this may seem like nothing special, it does feel pretty liberating. As usual, getting out on the peninsula means some decently long stretches of road at higher speed than what I usually see in town… it felt good.

Today’s special, courtesy of nature… thick, puffy clouds floating about while on the ride.

I had been looking forward to checking out the famous Lochside Trail pigs again and I was not disappointed. As usual it was good to be out on the bike, although my feet did get kind of cold. I probably shouldn’t complain though; sounded like it’s cold back east, definitely not bike riding weather.

I thought pretty hard about going skiing or snowboarding today, but decided to stick around town instead. Seems like its been ages since I rode a bike, and in reality it has been a pretty long while. Was it a Monty Python sketch involving some middle-ages town where someone was driving a cart around hollering "bring out yer dead…"? As I was riding through parts of Victoria today there were various Christmas tree drop-off spots and a surprising number of vehicles driving around with trees on the roof… people were bringing out their dead trees today.

It was nice and sunny today with some cloud (made for some ok ride photos), but a bit on the cool side. I made it through without booties, although my toes were a little cold by the end.

Headed out of town today to the thriving metropolis of Duncan for a pretty casual road / cross-bike ride. Road ride is probably not the best description since most of the ride was on the Trans Canada Trail; not impossible to ride a road bike on, but better on a cyclocross bike, or something with slightly wider tires.

Starting at Canadian Tire we headed west towards Lake Cowichan on the former railbed turned bike / multi-use trail. The original plan was to check out a branch of the trail that will eventually head towards Ladysmith and Nanaimo; we did indeed check it out, but didn’t get too far before running into a dead end – the trail is still under construction. Back on our westerly tack, we rode for a while until Paldi, a community that is not so much a community anymore. From there it was back to Duncan for some bagel-wiches and coffee.

Did a nice road ride today amidst the falling leaves and whatnot on the Saanich Peninsula. I was on my cyclocross bike (road bike with fatter tires) so I decided I would visit the somewhat famous Lochside Trail pigs. Generally, I don’t see these beasts much since I usually skip the portion of the Lochside Trail (just south of Mitchell’s Farm) where they are known to wallow. As expected the pigs were indeed wallowing… OK, some appeared to me eating remnants of onions, but the others were definitely wallowing and/or urinating.

My route was pretty much the usual for a Central Saanich ride. You can check it out on the map below.

By the title perhaps you are thinking this will be a feel good (for me) report about how I totally dominated on my East Sooke ride today. Unfortunately, no… East Sooke, as it often has in the past, totally dominated me. At least I didn’t have to phone for a ride home – that would have been bad.

So, what is total domination you may ask. On this day, I was first dominated by the hill from Esquimalt Lagoon up to Metchosin Road – no crying, but very slow and painful with some worry about what was to come. Domination part two came after a rather uncomfortable and slow climb on Rocky Point Road near Montreul Hill; there is a rather fun downhill towards Pedder Bay and dzamn, I get a flat as I’m getting close to 80km/h on the best part of the ride. Not long ago someone asked me if getting a flat on a downhill meant instant death – no, I don’t think so, but if you hear an abnormal ticking noise and then feel some thumping, better try and point it straight and start braking in a controlled manner. After a leisurely 10 minute flat change and significant sweating I headed off for more domination courtesy of the remaining hills on the way and what I would describe as warmer than average temperatures.

I ended up rolling back into Victoria feeling fairly worked over with visions of large Orangina Shirley Temples in my head. I guess I should know what it means, but something has seemed a little off in terms of performance lately… I should not be at max heart rate while doing 35-37km/h along flat stretches of the Galloping Goose, nor should I be at 110 beats per minute to change a flat. Maybe the four ice creams earlier this month and some recent laziness are to blame.

It seems like I haven’t been doing much road riding lately. Maybe I’ve been feeling that since the Seattle to Portland ride has come and gone, my season has come to a close and its time to start putting on blubber for the winter. That doesn’t really make sense since both August and September are usually almost as good as June and July. I guess maybe I’ve just been a bit lazy. I know I’ll be better off if I kick this recently acquired habit, and in keeping with this idea I figure I’ll make a reasonable effort to get back on the horse this week.

Today was the last day of our August long weekend; I got out for a 56km ride partly on my own, and partly with Michelle, Heather, and Lee. The route involved a variety of roads in the vicinity of Saanich, including a ride along Prospect Lake Road, which is almost always kind of fun due to its winding and hilly nature.

To put it bluntly, the ride up to the top of Hurricane Ridge from Port Angeles is hard. You see, it’s just over 30km long from the ferry to the top, which is at about 5,200ft above sea level. It’s a big freakin hill. I’ll be honest, I don’t really like doing this sort of ride purely for the exercise; I guess it’s partly the sense of achievement, but mostly it’s about the views, Hurricane Ridge is pretty spectacular.

Michelle, Kari, and I met at the Coho terminal (as in Coho Ferry terminal in Victoria) at about 5:30am to head over to Port Angeles. That’s now two weekends in a row where the alarm went off far earlier than I would have preferred. I don’t think I’ll make a habit of it, but it was pretty damn nice to roll through town down to the Inner Harbour at dawn. After about an hour and a half on the ferry we arrived in Port Angeles the starting point for our trip up the hill. From there it was up, up, up, seemingly forever, but it did eventually end with amazing views of the Olympic Mountains.

GPS Data: 74.0km – 4h52m (including stops) – about 1h48m from the visitor centre to the top – 20.8km/h (moving average) – GPS route

It’s been a little slow coming, but as promised here is part 2 of my Seattle to Portland bike ride report. Again, the ride was about 327km long and took Vince and I about 14h16m to do (11h05m of pedaling time). If you missed part 1 check out the link below to see the ride map and statistics.

Read part 1 of my Seattle to Portland bike ride report.

The Seattle to Portland (STP) group ride is an organized event that has apparently been running for 31 years now. I can’t comment on the number riders this year, but apparently there are typically about 10,000 riders, 15-20% of whom do the ride in one day. Since it’s not a race there is no formal timing system and the overall atmosphere is pretty relaxed. Another indicator that STP is something other than than a race is the fact that there are all sorts of human powered vehicles; there are road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes, unicycles, tandems, velomobiles, recumbents, longboard skateboards, and even super weird stuff like Elliptigos. Finally, it’s pretty cool that all sorts of people attempt and complete STP, the vast majority of whom do not look like racers, or even serious riders. Overall for me, STP was a great way to spend a day, but I suspect I may not feel the need to do this distance again. Never say never though.
