After some long hikes (not on Wednesdays) through Thetis Lake Park earlier this year, it disappeared from my radar for a while. Too much Thetis Lake? How can that be? This after thinking on one of the more recent long hikes that there were still some nooks and crannies (is that even a word?) in the park I hadn’t been to yet. Whatever was blocking my Thetis radar seems to have disappeared and so that’s where we went this Wednesday.

I think, in my head, I was planning on a non-main-trail hike, in other words not on the main trail that goes around upper and lower Thetis Lake. In the end that’s not quite what happened although there was a good portion in the first half of the hike spent in the Salal and amongst other trail encroacher plants along the north and east side of the park near McKenzie Lake.

Longish hike numero deux for Michelle and I today. Last week we did about 17km at Thetis Lake; this week we started at the north end of Mt. Work near Durrance Lake and headed south. The hike itself was good… big climb up to about 450m at the top of Mt. Work; a somewhat technical descent to Munn Road and then pretty easy trail to and through Thetis Lake Park. Despite the height of Mt. Work the views are not quite wide open like at Mt. Doug, but they’re good none the less. This week I changed up the shoe and sock combination and thankfully avoided the sort of massive blisters I ended up with last week.

Managed to forget to put the battery in my camera before the hike… no photos:(

There has been some discussion in the household about doing some longer one-day hikes this year… Albert Edward and Juan de Fuca most notably. With that in mind, Michelle and I have decided that we will need to do some preparation since both of the previously mentioned hikes are at least 30km long. Today may have counted as a start of sorts towards our preparation, although I now have some super sweet blisters on my heels which may slow my preparation somewhat.

I actually had some difficulty trying to figure out where we could do a 20km hike; it seemed like what I was looking at on the map wouldn’t get us enough distance. We ended up deciding on Thetis Lake Park with the idea of trying to figure out how to link Thetis Lake with Mt. Work. We started at the main Thetis Lake parking lot and headed north toward Munn Road. In the end we didn’t quite make it to Munn Road, but we were close. I figure the next time I feel like doing a 20km hike I’ll probably do a one way trip and finish up at the north end of Mt. Work.

Minus the blisters, which suck, it was another great hike on south Vancouver Island.

Oh wait, I do have something else, aside from blisters, to complain about. What is the deal with people leaving bags of dog shit on the side of the trail? I guess some of the shite bags might be biodegradable, but it makes zero sense to me why someone would go to the trouble to pick up dog crap with a plastic bag, and then leave the friggin thing in the forest.

Ahhh, it felt good today to get out for a hike. While I was out and about yesterday in downtown Vic I found myself thinking that it was looking a bit brown around town, kind of like how places look in the more wintry parts of Canada. In the forest, not surprisingly, it’s plenty green. I guess maybe I have not been in the forest enough lately to get my green fix. Aside from the green, Thetis offered up some good uphill slogging, nice views, juicy mud, and an almost raging McKenzie Creek.

A strange lull in the weather tonight… calm with sort of clear skies. Lately it’s been windy with lots of precipitation; no actual cats and dogs though. A few of us headed out to Thetis Lake this evening for a lap around the lake(s), also known as Upper and Lower Thetis Lake. Pretty dark at the start, but after about half an hour a reasonably full moon (not my butt) made an appearance and brightened things up a bit. When we got to the north end of the lake, the view of the moon was pretty spectacular over the water. All in all, another fine Wednesday night hike.

I can’t think of any particularly good reasons for this, not even any interesting make believe reasons. Tonight the signs of Fall were everywhere, some leaves on the ground, cooler temperatures, rain, and early darkness (7:30pm). Regardless of all that, I thought is was a pretty good outing.

I’ve been lost… lost in Olympic TV watching purgatory. I can hardly believe I found the strength to get out for the Wednesday night hike. Tonight the destination was Thetis Lake. I guess I better set the record straight since my lack of blog activity might lead you to believe I really do have a couch permanently attached to my ass; some TV, some work, some other stuff, but not so much blogging.

It’s really starting to feel Spring-like around here with cherry blossoms all over the place, relatively warm temperatures, less precipitation, and some Springy smells. The hike tonight was great with a clear, starry sky and good trails. Slightly disappointed – did not see a single slug tonight.

You never know what might happen out in the real world, and tonight’s hike was a good example. Hmmm, this sounds a bit Forrest Gump’ish doesn’t it? Well, the hike tonight was lacking as far as the weather went (rain), but as usual we made due. What made this hike abnormal was our encounter with a guy who claimed his brother was lost in the park without a light, and our ensuing search effort.

We met the non-lost brother through some light flashing and yelling near the dividing line between Upper Thetis Lake and Lower Thetis Lake (the Trillium Trail). Without much of an idea about where to start looking for the lost brother — Thetis Lake and the neighbouring wilderness is pretty big — we decided to head off around Upper Thetis Lake in a clockwise direction, while the non-lost brother set off in a counter-clockwise direction. Did I mention that it was wet out? It really was, but over the course of the evening the rain let up, thankfully. After about 15-20 minutes we got far enough around Upper Thetis that we could see a familiar light across the lake (the non-lost brother). At this point, and somewhat miraculously, we the searchers were able to locate the lost brother audibly; we were really close to him, but were separated by water, meaning that we had to back track 15-20 minutes to get back to the Trillium Trail where we could reach him by land. Another 30 minutes or so passed before we and the non-lost brother were able to locate a cold, wet, and tired lost brother.

It took some effort, but we (searchers and lost one) made it back to the parking lot at Highland Road. I tend not to believe much in mysterious forces at work in our everyday lives, but it was interesting how things unfolded tonight. Play safe peoples, especially in the dark, scary wilderness (yes, I realize Thetis Lake barely qualifies as wilderness).
